Aperi.
Aperi is a wonderful mountainous village that it is distinguished from the rest of the Karpathian villages for its shine. It has existed as the capital
of Karpathos island from 1700 until 1892.
When dangers from sea eliminated, the capital of the island was moved from Aperi - which could not be seen from the sea - to Pigadia which was situated on the seaside.
But nobility from those times still remained...
And Aperi is the seat - the smallest in Greece - of the Archbishop
of Karpathos and Kasos.
Aperi can be found in a distance of 8 km. north-westerly from the city of Karpathos.
Take a walk in Aperi and you admire its beauties. Walk the streets of the village, the green narrow streets of Valantou, admire the imposing
mansions, the church of Saint Charalampoy and Loron, and the immense
full of trees extents of the southern part that surround the village.
Although the majority of the inhabitants of the village have migrated - mainly to the United States – it is remarkable how the people have maintained their houses according to tradition.
Nothing seems abandoned or deserted although most people
don't live in the village all year round. On the contrary.
A picturesque village lays on the green hillsides.
Following the paths of the village you will reach in the splendid beaches of Ahata and the famous beach of Kyra Panagia.
Kyra Panagia is one of the most famous places of the island and one of the most photographed landscapes of Karpathos. You will swim in crystal clear waters and will relax in the immense sandy beach enjoying the sun and the splendid nature.
On the way to Kyra Panagia you will also find the green settlements of Mertonas and Katodio, coming from north or southern equivalents and you will taste the cool running water that flows naturaly.
In Aperi you will find available rented rooms and hotels. Most of them in the coastal settlement of Kyra Panagia.
